Backsplashes: Think Outside the Box
Wednesday, July 31, 2013
We here at Cypress Design CO. are always looking for new and efficient ways to make your kitchen functional and accessible. When it comes to finding free space in the kitchen, many homeowners will tell you they’re all out, but most kitchens have a large area of free space just waiting to be used: the backsplash.
Kitchen backsplashes are often decorative and add to the overall design of the kitchen, but by utilizing that space, you can also make your kitchen more functional. By using a rail or other system to hang objects from your backsplash, you can free up counter space by storing items, such as a knife block, up in the air. If you’re remodeling you could also consider making your kitchen high-tech by building a TV or microwave directly into the backsplash.
Here are some great tips we found on utilizing your backsplash:
Your backsplash is waiting to be called into action, so go get creative and put it to good use.

Railing systems are easy to install on any type of backsplash. Choose your own set of hooks, containers and ledges to create the configuration you need.
Knife and towel rack
This backsplash installation keeps both within arm’s reach, making prep, cooking and cleaning much easier.
Utensil and spice racks
Get a professional look by keeping your cooking utensils neatly organized and ou tin the open, just like you’d see in a restaurant. Find a shelf or spice rack to hang directly on your backsplash for easy access.
Oils and spice niche
A wall’s depth — about 3 to 4 inches — is rarely utilized to its fullest potential. It’s a great space to create a niche for everyday oils, spices and other cooking necessities. It will help you take advantage of every square inch your kitchen offers.
Microwaves often take up valuable space. If you’re tight on space but can’t imagine living without a microwave, simply build one into your backsplash.
Prep your meals along with your favorite celebrity chef. Building an HDTV straight into your backsplash means you can watch every move without having to crane your neck, and you can catch up on your favorite shows while dinner is in the oven.
Hide your awkward countertop appliances behind flush tambourdoors. The countertop extends inside these appliance garages, so your blender, toaster and food processor can slide out with ease. See if you can have outlets installed inside to avoid constant plugging and unplugging.
